You might laugh the first time you see one, but spend a week with the Suzuki Super Carry X and you’ll get it. This tiny truck isn’t just a tool. It’s a characterful companion, and our 2018 DA16T model is about as loveable and practical as kei trucks get.
Kei trucks like the Super Carry have a cult following for a reason. They’re cheap to run, endlessly useful, and way more fun to drive than they have any right to be. The DA16T generation improves on that formula with more modern features, a slightly wider cab than its predecessors, and excellent visibility for navigating tight spaces.
The Super Carry X trim brings the charm and adds a layer of refinement to this compact utility hero.

Powered by the zippy R06A 658cc 3-cylinder engine, the Super Carry X is obviously not going to win any drag races, but that’s not the point. Paired with a 5-speed manual transmission, the little engine feels eager and surprisingly responsive. It’ll buzz its way to 100 km/h eventually, but around town and on backroads it’s genuinely engaging to drive.
Clutch feel is light, gear changes are crisp, and steering is tight enough to make U-turns in the width of a laneway. The engine is mounted under the front seats, which not only saves space but gives the Super Carry its distinctive mid-engined vibe. For a workhorse, it’s surprisingly balanced.
Fuel economy is outstanding. The Super Carry will regularly get around 5.0 to 5.5L/100km, and to be honest, you can run these things on fumes. With a 37-litre tank, you get plenty of range before needing a refill.

One of the standout features of the X model is the added comfort and equipment. For a kei truck, this thing is surprisingly refined inside.
You get:
The driving position is upright and commanding. The cabin is just roomy enough even for taller drivers, (At 6’2″, I fit no worries, and I’ve managed to squeeze a 6’10” giant into the passenger seat quite comfortably too) Visibility is phenomenal, and sitting right over the front axle makes it feel like you can see the corners of the Earth.
While it’s still a work truck at heart, the Super Carry X doesn’t feel barebones. Everything is built tough, with simple, durable plastics that are easy to wipe down. Bonus points for the overhead storage, and the extra storage behind the seats, which are a welcome touch for everyday use.

This is where the Super Carry truly stands out. Despite its compact size, it packs serious practicality. The Space Cab 4×4 variant offers a payload capacity of around 350–400 kg, making it perfect for trades, rural work, or weekend hauls. Thanks to its selectable part-time 4WD system with low range and a factory rear differential lock, the Super Carry can confidently tackle muddy paddocks, gravel tracks, and uneven terrain. When the going gets tough, that diff lock ensures both rear wheels stay driving, helping you stay in control when traction is limited.
The tray measures approximately 1,480 mm in length and 1,410 mm in width, with 285 mm sidewalls, giving you a solid and versatile load area. All three tray sides drop down for easy forklift access or hand loading from any direction.
An extra bonus of the Space Cab is the pass-through bulkhead hatch, which allows for carrying items up to 1,850 mm long, such as timber lengths or piping. Combine that with leaf-spring rear suspension, and you’ve got a kei truck that’s built to work hard both on and off the beaten path.

The Suzuki Super Carry X (DA16T) is one of the most practical and charming vehicles I’ve ever driven. It’s cheap to run, fun to drive, and useful in more ways than you’d expect. Whether you’re running a small business, need a farm ute, or just want something different for weekend runs to the hardware store, it delivers.
And let’s be honest, nothing gets more smiles at a servo or bunnings than rocking up in a tiny JDM truck with plates on it.
