Subaru WRX STi S204 – The Ultimate Driver’s STI

There are special Subarus, and then there’s the S204. Built in extremely limited numbers (just 600 units worldwide), the Subaru WRX STi S204 is a factory-tuned, track-ready weapon that still manages to be completely liveable day-to-day.

After being lucky enough to spend time behind the wheel of one (have I mentioned I love my job?!), it’s clear: this isn’t just another special edition, it’s in my opinion one of the best cars Subaru ever built.

What Exactly Is the S204?

The S204 is a special edition based on the GD-chassis WRX STI, produced in 2006 by Subaru Tecnica International (STI), Subaru’s in-house motorsport division. It wasn’t just a sticker pack – this was a true engineering project, with genuine performance and chassis upgrades far beyond a regular STI.

Only 600 examples were built for the Japanese domestic market, making it a true collector’s car today.

Precision Tuned Performance by STI

Under the bonnet, the EJ20 2.0L turbocharged flat-four gets serious attention. Subaru upgraded the turbo system, added a bespoke ECU tune, a low-back-pressure exhaust, and improved breathing components. Output rises to 235kW, delivering exhilarating acceleration and a real sense of urgency every time you squeeze the throttle.

There’s just something about the sound of the S204 that is intriguing, it doesn’t sound like your typical Subaru motor, the boxer rumble isn’t quite there and in fact, it makes the car sound somewhat exotic.

The 0-100km/h sprint comes up in just 4.5 seconds, with a strong, linear pull right through the rev range.

The engine note is pure rally-bred symphony, and the way the S204 builds speed is both intoxicating and addictive.

Backing it all up is a brilliant 6-speed manual gearbox, which feels mechanical and direct, and the engine’s responsiveness makes rev–matching downshifts effortless and satisfying.

On our particular S204, we have a few tasteful enhancements that really brought out the best of the platform without losing any of its character.

It’s equipped with WRX STI Genome Defi gauges, perfectly integrated to keep an eye on critical vitals without cluttering the cabin.

Under the bonnet, is a carbon fibre intake system, a catch can setup for engine health, and Greddy carbon fibre air diversion plates – all small but meaningful touches that enhance performance, reliability, and aesthetics without straying from the S204’s spirit.

Stealth Fighter Looks

The S204 keeps things understated yet aggressive. It wears a subtle but purposeful bodykit, complete with a revised front lip, S204-specific 18-inch BBS wheels, and a lower-profile trunk lip spoiler instead of the traditional STI rally wing.

Finished in Crystal Grey Metallic, it’s a car that serious enthusiasts recognise immediately, but it flies under the radar for everyone else—a true wolf in sheep’s clothing.

Motorsport-Inspired Cabin

Step inside and you immediately feel the difference. The centrepiece of the cabin is a pair of carbon fibre-backed Recaro bucket seats. They are lightweight, hug you firmly through corners, yet remain comfortable enough for longer drives—a perfect balance of function and comfort.

Complementing the seats are the S204-specific steering wheel, carbon fibre trim, and metallic shift knob, all designed to put the driver at the centre of the action.

The STI Genome Defi gauges fitted in our car add a touch of motorsport theatre while serving a functional purpose – keeping you updated on vital temps and pressures with precision.

How Does It Feel to Drive?

From the first turn of the wheel, the S204 feels alive. The quicker steering ratio (13:1) and the specially tuned Bilstein dampers deliver a chassis that is tight, reactive, and utterly confidence-inspiring.

On a good backroad, the car is playful and razor sharp, yet composed and planted. Body control is outstanding, and the ride quality remains usable even on rougher roads.

The combination of punchy power, intuitive handling, and the perfectly weighted controls make the S204 one of the most rewarding cars to drive – whether you’re carving up corners or just enjoying a spirited Sunday cruise.

Final Verdict

The WRX STI S204 represents the absolute pinnacle of Subaru’s GD platform. It’s faster, sharper, and more refined than a regular STI, but it never loses the raw engagement and soul that made Subaru famous.

Our particular example, with its tasteful upgrades like the carbon intake, catch can, Greddy carbon air diversion plates, and Defi gauges, takes that magic even further—adding subtle improvements without diluting the original recipe.

If you ever get the chance to own one, seize it. With only 600 built—and even fewer properly preserved—the S204 isn’t just a great Subaru: it’s one of the great JDM legends. In fact, our review car just happens to be for sale right now!
